Alluvial mining was once very important in gold, diamond and tin mining but has fallen into disuse. There are now almost no geologists or mining engineers who understand it.

There is a common belief that it is a very simple process and consequently, make basic errors in exploration, evaluation, mining and processing which frequently cause projects to fail where they could have been successful.

In addition, alluvial mining projects are often fradulent or unrealistic scheme which should be exposed ar an early stage. Even experienced geologists and engineers will fall for these if they only have experience of hard rock projects.
